Hayatın Tuzu

Bitlis is best known for the atmosphere captured in the song "Five Minarets in Bitlis"—a small city defined by its arid landscape, rich history, and tobacco. Medine, an elderly woman, lives with her three grown children: a mosque imam, a cigarette factory worker, and a student at a tutoring center. Already burdened by their struggles, her troubles worsen when her fourth child, who had been selling pirated CDs in Istanbul, unexpectedly comes home, plunging the family into deeper hardship. In this isolated, oppressive place, everyone—from a wounded cow wandering the hills to the imam—carries a matter of pride. As the camera moves nearer, appearances begin to fracture, drawing us in to uncover the truth.
