Otto von Habsburg, born on November 20, 1912, was the final crown prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, holding this title from 1916 until the empire's collapse in November 1918. Following the death of his father in 1922, Otto assumed the role of pretender to the former thrones and became the head of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. He also took on the prestigious position of sovereign of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

Throughout his life, Otto was a prominent advocate for European unity and played a significant role in promoting democratic values. He was a member of the European Parliament from 1979 to 1989, where he championed various causes, including human rights and the integration of Eastern European countries into the European Union.

In 2000, Otto made the decision to step down as Sovereign of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and in 2007, he relinquished his position as head of the Imperial House.
