Zdeněk Svěrák, born on March 28, 1936, in Prague, stands as one of the most beloved figures in Czech culture, renowned for his work as an actor, humorist, and screenwriter. He graduated in 1958 with a degree in Czech language and literature from Charles University’s Faculty of Education. Over the years, Svěrák has made significant contributions to the arts, crafting over 300 musical texts, numerous plays, and more than ten films.
Among his notable screenwriting achievements are "Kolya" (Czech: Kolja), which won an Academy Award, and "The Elementary School" (Czech: Obecná Škola), which received an Academy Award nomination. Both films were directed by his son, Jan Svěrák. Additionally, alongside his close friend Ladislav Smoljak, Svěrák co-created the iconic fictional character Jára Cimrman—a polymath who encompasses various talents and fields. In a 2005 public vote, Jára Cimrman was named The Greatest Czech, though his fictional status prevented him from officially claiming the title.
