Matt Shea is a British documentary filmmaker, journalist, and presenter known for his work on crime and fringe subcultures.
Shea began his career as a writer for VICE Magazine. As VICE expanded into digital, broadcast, and feature documentaries, he produced several films and series, including Gaycation, featuring actor Elliot Page, and Chemsex.
He is best known as the creator, producer, and presenter of High Society, a documentary series examining drug culture in the UK with access to real criminals. He also made the award-winning feature-length documentary Time To Die, filmed over four years, which explores the illegal global network that sources, buys, and sells assisted-dying methods. His viral VICE documentaries include Iceman, Targeted Individuals, The Pink Cocaine Wave, Ravers Vs. Putin, The Celebrity Millionaires of Competitive Gaming, and The Last Festival on Earth.
Shea is widely credited by fellow filmmakers and reporters as the first journalist and presenter to gain access to the Albanian Mafia and the Colombian Clan Del Golfo Cartel, for the Channel 4 documentary A New Cocaine Mafia. He also made a special VICE report titled The Dangerous Rise of Andrew Tate, released on VICE and other platforms worldwide in January 2023, which later drew criticism after accusations of fabricating lies. He helped produce two well-received drug programs for Netflix and Channel 5, Britain's Cocaine Epidemic and Dope.
